  ABOUT JARDIM ZOOLOGICO

The Jardim Zoologico-(RIO ZOO), is Brazil's oldest zoo and considered one of the best in the world today. The zoo was founded in 1888 and covers 30 acres,(12ha). The Jardim Zoologico is home to more than 2,100 animals and 350 different species, including one of the most complete collections of Brazilian butterflies and mammals. The zoo also boasts a spectacular aquarium that houses a variety of fascinating river species and an excellent aviary.

In the early 19th century an English aristocrat presented the beautiful main entrance gate to Dom Pedro I and Empress Leopoldina as a wedding gift. The zoo is located on the former royal landscaped grounds of "The Quinta da Boa Vista", were you walk through to enter the zoo.

There is plenty of food and beverages along with gifts to purchase here. People usually spend the entire day at the zoo, as there are so many different types of animals to see.

The "Museu Nacional" is the countries oldest scientific institution and was founded in 1818 by Dom Joao VI. This is another part of the day spent after visiting the zoo and located on the same grounds.

The Museu started out as the house of birds before becoming the royal museum, the imperial museum, and finally the national museum.

You will be busy all day here, from visiting the zoo, to the national museum and dinner, so expect nothing short of a fantastic day!
