| ABOUT JOCKEY CLUB | ||
Joquei Clube Brasileiro or "jockey club" has one of the most spectacular settings of any race coarse in the world today. The race track is just 5 minutes from Ipanema beach, and is situated next to the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon, part of which was reclaimed to build the compound. The views of the Lagoa and Corcovado mountains are breathtaking, as is much of the sites in Rio.
The track was built in 1920-1926 and the clubhouse grandstand was first opened in 1926, with the main stand designed in a LouisXV style, which still looks and is maintained to the highest standards of those times. There are 5 stands in total, a paddock, a turf track, two sand tracks and an equestrian village. The 3 left handed courses consist of the outer turf track which measures 2,200m, the dirt racing track which measures 2,040, and a second dirt track which measures 1,700m. Races on this flat galloping track are seldom run slowly and jockeys tend to present their challenges early at the top of the 600m stretch. Employees of the track are extremely polite and helpful with placing bets and bringing refreshments to your table during the race. Everything from the betting parlours, gardens and paddock, to the many restaurants and bars are run with the most ultimate efficiency. The biggest race of the year and one of South Americas most important is the Grande Premio Brasil do Turfe, that was first run in 1933. The race traditionally takes place every August. Gavea has a flourishing apprentice academy with very high standards of jockey-ship, which has produced some great South American jockeys like Jorge Ricardo, Alex Mota and Goncalinho Ameida. Although the racing village of Gavea houses 800 people and 1500 horses along its backstretch, horses are also trained in the training centers and farms in the cooler parts of Rio state. Jockey club Brasileiro - (JCB) has come under new administration since 1992, centering around racing and (OTB) or off track betting, and since has led Gavea to prosper once more. The state of Rio has 93 off track betting parlours and there are another 23 OTB's throughout the other Brazilian states. Some of the famous Brazilian horses that raced abroad include Much better, Riboletto and Gentleman. These are just a few samples of why Brazilian, South American and US breeders and owners are so drawn to our paddock. Thank you for visiting riodejaneirotoursandtravel.com |
