What is a Carioca?
A carioca is a person who was born in Rio De Janeiro, with both parents also being born in Rio De Janeiro.

The word "Rio" is of the Tupin Indian origin and means: the white house, but for Cariocas there is no ethnic significance, mainly because Rio and the vast majority of Brazillians here are a mixture of many peoples.

There is a term popularly used in Rio called, "Carioca De Gema" which means' those born in Rio with both Carioca parents. And there is another term called, " the clear cariocas", which means those born in Rio De Janeiro with no Carioca parents. But if you were born anywhere else, welcome to Rio, welcome to be a Carioca at heart!

Music is a very big part of Rio's culture, with the main music rythm being Samba, which is the major emphasis of the carnaval parades. All Cariocas can dance the Samba and are always ready to teach. So don't be shy!

Cariocas love tourists and love talking about there culture, as well as learning the cultures of those who visit. Cariocas are warm and friendly, they are proud people who like to talk and socialize, along with helping anyone in need, with there greatest feature being that they are always smiling.
