Jardim Botanico was founded in 1808 by the Prince Regent, Dom Joao V1. It is one of the worlds most fascinating gardens and should definetly be on everyone's list of things to see when in Rio.
It was originally meant to acclimatize spices and plants coming in from the East Indies and the Orient. It later became the royal garden and opened its gates in 1822 to the public. Many famous people have visited the garden since the opening including Charles Darwin in 1832 and Albert Einstein in 1925 to name a few.
Today the Jardim Botanical boasts 205 acres (83ha) of natural rain forest, and is home to countless species of plants, mammals reptiles and birds. The 200 imperial palms that line its main avenues is its signature attraction along with a few other attractions within its grounds as well. Rio's original gunpowder factory is one of these which dates back to 1808 when the garden was founded. The Empresses Mansion is also here, and since then has become the headquarters of the National School of Tropical Botany in 2001. The garden gates of The Fine Arts Academy can also be found here.
