  ABOUT RIO CHURCHES

N. Sra. da Candelaria

The classic symmetry of Candelária's white dome and bell towers casts an unexpected air of sanity over the chaos of downtown traffic. The church was built on the site of a chapel founded in 1610 by Antônio de Palma after he survived a shipwreck; paintings in the present dome tell his tale. Construction on the present church began in 1775, and although it was formally dedicated by the emperor in 1811, work on the dome wasn't completed until 1877. The sculpted bronze doors were exhibited at the 1889 world's fair in Paris.

Mosteiro de S. Bento

The main chapel of the Mosteiro de São Bento, a Benedictine monastery, is considered one of Brazil's most beautiful. It once housed the nation's first law school.

Founded in 1590 by monks from Bahia, the Benedictine Monastery in Rio de Janeiro was built at the request of the inhabitants of the newly founded city of San Sebastian. Em pleno Centro da grande metrópole, conserva-se aqui um lugar de silêncio, paz, oração e trabalho, que se traduz em diversas atividades mantidas regularmente. Right in center large city, keeps it's a place of silence, peace, prayer and work, which translates into several activities held regularly.
As duas principais são as celebrações diárias do Ofício Divino e da Missa, com canto gregoriano. The two main celebrations are the daily Divine Office and Mass with Gregorian chant.

Sao Francisco da Penitencia

Located in the center of Rio de Janeiro, the Sao Francisco da Penitencia Church is one of the most awe-inspiring examples of the late Baroque architecture in the country of Brazil. It’s also believed to hold more gold than any other church in the New World. The Church was actually considered completely finished in 1773, however it was inaugurated in 1736. Construction on the Sao Francisco da Penitencia Church was actually started over a hundred years before, in 1653.

Catedral Metrapolitana

This is one of the older churchs in Rio. It is sitting on 61m high, on top of a little hill in front of Flamengo Beach. It's construction begun in 1671. On that year, a portuguese man, named Antonio de Caminha, made a small "capela" on top of a hill in honor of "Our Saint Gloria" (Nossa Senhora da Gloria). In 1699, the little church got a big donation in cash for a construction of the church we know today. The project was designed by Tenet Coronel Jose Cardoso Ramalho. Nobody knows who did the beautiful altars or the splendid internal decoration. The style is based on the church of Sao Pedro dos Clerigos, in the city of Porto , in Portugual, Europe. Every year in August the Outeiro da Gloria is prepared for a party that has been happening during the last 260 years. In the 19th century this was considered the biggest city's party. The construction has finished in 1739 and then the Bisp Frei Antonio de Guadalupe created the Irmandade de Nossa Senhora da Gloria. The church really got famous in 1808 when the portuguese court family arrived in Brazil. In 1819 the princess maria da Gloria came to Brazil with her grand father Don Joao VI for the consagration cerimony. Since then, all the members of the family Braganca, born in Brazil are consagrated in that church. The hill whre the church is sitting is named "Morro do Leripe" or "Urucumirim" and it was in front of the sea with a fort full of French army , that was dominated by the Portugueses in january, 20th, 1567 by Estacio de Sa, the man who created the city of Sao Sebastiao do Rio de Janeiro, nowadays worldwide know as Rio de Janeiro. This man got killed here when conquered the church back to the Portugueses. So this is a historical place in Rio de Janeiro and very important to our history.

Convento Sto Antonio

The Convent of St. Anthony was completed in 1780, but some parts date from 1615, making it one of Rio's oldest structures. Its baroque interior contains priceless colonial art—including wood carvings and wall paintings. The sacristy is covered with azulejos (Portuguese tiles). Note that the church has no bell tower: its bells hang from a double arch on the monastery ceiling. An exterior mausoleum contains the tombs of the offspring of Dom Pedro I and Dom Pedro II.
